„Rethinking structures - a post gallery“ so beschreiben Anne Schwanz & Johanna Neuschäffer ihr junges Unternehmen "Office Impart". Die Kunstwelt hat ja nicht wirklich reagiert auf die radikalen Veränderungen der letzten Jahre, vor allem was die massive Transformation unseres Lebens durch die Digitalisierung angeht. Unter anderem deshalb funktioniert das klassische Galeriemodel ja inzwischen auch nicht mehr. Anne und Johanna geht es darum neue Konzepte zu entwickeln und natürlich auch mit Leben zu füllen. Konzepte, die besser in die heutige Zeit passen und es wieder möglich machen, Kunst auch profitabel zu zeigen und zu vermitteln.

Geeignet dafür sind die beiden allemal, sie kennen den ganz großen Galeriebetrieb gut von innen, denn Sie waren viele Jahre bei Eigen+Art tätig, eine der wichtigsten deutschen Galerien der letzten 30 Jahre.

Ich bin ganz begeistert, genau mein Thema - und herausgekommen ist ein wundervolles und sehr leidenschaftliches Gespräch über die Erneuerung des Kunstbetriebs.

After a longer quiet period Jonathan and I have managed to talk again in our ongoing series of conversations about the art world.

We talk about the current status of our galleries and about the very early beginnings, we go from our huge shows back in the days to the mega shows of today, we look at the changes and the new art corporations as we call them, and ponder if we want to be a part of this or not. We also try to answer the question of a listener about opening a gallery today, like, if it makes sense in the first place or what’s to consider, and doing this we both start to disagree and get provocative, it really becomes a bit of a rant.

But hey, this one was pretty difficult, from a technological standpoint. We had to switch platforms three times, because nothing really seems to properly work for these long-distance conversations. It all worked out fine in the end but postproduction was a bear and I edited a lot in this one. To make it more fun though I decided to turn this episode into a different kind of show, inserting some music by Jonathans band Cyclone Static and picking up the guitar myself at the studio.

Matthias Kammermeier hat über 35 Jahre Erfahrung beim Film gesammelt, mit Roland Emmerich gearbeitet und schonmal den deutschen Fernsehpreis gewonnen. Er war bei über 60 nationalen und internationalen Spielfilmen Head of Department, hat unzählige Ausstellungen verantwortet, ist Ausstellungsdesigner bei der Staatsgalerie Stuttgart und derzeit in doppelter Funktion als Vorstand und Szenograf verantwortlich bei der "Märchenwelten AG".

Was die "Märchenwelten" genau sind, wie ihn sein Weg dorthin geführt hat und was für eine große Rolle die Vermittlung von Werten bei dem gesamten Projekt spielen - insbesondere in der heutigen Zeit - darüber unterhalten wir uns in dieser Folge meines Podcasts.

I spoke with artist and fellow podcaster Matt Gondek. Matt runs Clean Break, a podcast about art and the business, from his studio in Los Angeles, California.

I came across his podcast when I was pointed towards Matt’s conversation with Jeff Soto a few weeks ago, and I was getting curious to learn more about him, and I saw the similarities between what we both are trying to achieve with our individual shows: get more insight from professionals, gain more understanding of the art world and share the knowledge of others with everyone who is interested.

Es war Royalty im Studio, denn mit Mirko kam eine der größten deutschen Grafitti-Legenden zu mir! Die meisten kennen ihn vermutlich auch besser unter dem Namen DAIM, obwohl er schon eben auch seit vielen Jahren unter seinem echten Namen arbeitet und international ausstellt.

Und Mirko ist ein so bescheidener Mensch, vermutlich hasst er die Begriffe Legende und Royalty, aber wie soll man jemanden beschreiben, der die deutsche Graffiti-Szene derart nachhaltig beeinflusst hat wie DAIM? Und das schon seit den 80er Jahren?

DAIM hat vor 30 Jahren seinen ganz eigenen 3-D Style entwickelt, der ihn weltberühmt gemacht hat und den er bis heute kontinuierlich weiterentwickelt. Wir sprechen über die Anfänge der Graffiti-Szene in Hamburg, sein künstlerisches Werk draussen und im Studio, für die Straße und für Galerien und Institutionen, und eben die Entwicklung dieses ganz besonderen Styles und natürlich die massive Arbeit, die in der ständigen Wiederholung des eignen Namens steckt.

Aber eigentlich muss ich ja gar nicht viel zu ihm sagen. Ich bin auf alle Fälle sehr stolz auf dieses Folge, auf dieses wirklich tolle Gespräch mit einem Ausnahmekünstler, der auch mich gefühlt schon ewig begleitet und beeindruckt , lange schon, bevor ich ihn kennengelernt habe.

Und auch wenn Urban Art oder Urban Contemporary or New Urban Contemporary oder wie auch immer man es nun auch nennen mag, heutzutage größer zu sein scheint als je zuvor, so war die Zeit Anfang der 90er doch vermutlich die, die am stärksten zur Wahrnehmung und Entwicklung des Graffiti in Deutschland beigetragen hat und ohne die der heutige Hype nicht möglich wäre.

Morton Andersen is an abstract painter from Aalborg, which is way up north in Denmark. I met Morton a few years ago at an opening of the Gallery Wolfsen, and liked him a lot from day one. But it is really hard to meet him, because he is a total studio rat, always working on his very distinct paintings, so we never find much time to hang out when I am in Aalborg.

Anyway, last week we connected by messenger when he hit me up to give me feedback for the recent English heliumTALK with Tina Ziegler from Moniker Art Fair (you should try and listen to that one, it’s quite a good view on the art market today).

Morton liked that podcast and he also wrote that he had a show with Tina ten years ago in Barcelona. Small world. But we also started chatting about the changes in the art game for artists and mid-level galleries and soon were typing long texts back and forth.

That is when I said - let’s talk on the podcast. And man, Morton is amazing, when he talks about his work and how he approaches it and where he is rooted, that is simply fascinating to listen. You should try and look at his work online to understand it even better.

We also speak about the art world, the market changes, how young artists should look at galleries, and their work, all just opinions, of course, but pretty experienced ones because we are both in this game for a bit. Morton has a big show coming up in Summer at the knew_conscious Gallery in Denver, so I really appreciate him taking the time to chat with me.

Live während der Eröffnung der Gruppenausstellung „We’re still here“ habe ich Mini-Podcasts mit den Besuchern aufgenommen - Speed-Podcasting habe ich das mal genannt.

Meine Gäste dafür habe ich mir erst am Abend selber unmittelbar aus dem Publikum rekrutiert und mich mit ihnen für kurze Gespräche an die Mikrofone gesetzt. Tina Ziegler is the director of the Moniker Art Fair, a very special one amongst the numerous fairs that are happening all around the world today. Moniker has been founded 10 years ago in London and in 2018 opened up in New York as well, where it will pop up again for the second time in May this year.

Moniker is special because it has its roots deep in the Graffiti and Street Art Culture and is less fair and more festival, celebrating the youngest and fastest growing movement in contemporary art.

Tina has developed her deep passion for Urban Art when she was a teenager in California, which is not too long ago for her, but the amount of art related work she has pulled off in her career since is impressive, insane actually when you look at all the gallery shows, curation and education projects she has been involved with or launched herself. Crazy.

She also founded The Art Conference which combines keynote speakers from the worlds of technology and culture with contemporary exhibitions, discussing what’s going on the art market, so she is definitely not just looking at the colorful side of the business, but also on the business itself.

Well. This one is a bit special. It is only 12 minutes long so I hope you'll try it out! I am adding a new format to heliumTALK, a possibility to make short and sweet in between recordings, most will be with guests, and for some (like this one) I'll be going solo.

Hubertus von Barby ist der Geschäftsführer der Kommunikationsagentur Newskontor. Er hat vor inzwischen 7 Jahren ein wunderbares Förderprojekt ins Leben gerufen, das junge und zumeist unentdeckte Kunst in Unternehmen bringt. „add art - Hamburgs Wirtschaft öffnet Türen für Kunst“ heisst das, und dabei geht es darum, unternehmerische Kunstförderung öffentlich und erlebbar zu machen.

Einmal im Jahr stellen Hamburger Firmen in ihren Räumen für ein paar Tage Künstler vor, die sie zunächst in einem Auswahlverfahren für sich entdecken und dann der Öffentlichkeit präsentieren. Dies machen sie gemeinsam mit dem Add Art-Team und der HAW, der Hochschule für Angewandte Wissenschaften Hamburg. Die nächste „add art“ findet vom 21. bis 24. November statt.
