This week I will keep the intro to a minimum. Because in this show I have no guest, and I haven’t even recorded it myself. This is my speech from the Creative Mornings session I was so kindly invited to speak at last month. The topic was MUSE.

I believe I said everything I had to say about MUSE in the 30 minutes you get as a speaker, so here all that is left to do is to send out a very warm and big thank you to the nice team of volunteers from the Creative Mornings Hamburg Chapter, to the large number of guests that came to hear me speak, and a special one to Rachel Beyerlein, who invited me and said all those nice things about me in her introduction, which is the starting point for this special episode of the heliumTALK podcast.

My guest today: the artist Jaybo Monk. Is there really anything I need to say about him? He has been around some time, creating an intense body of work, he is showing internationally at great galleries for many years his work is part of huge collections, such as the Dean Collection of Swizz Beats and Alicia Keyes, and his early background is as exciting as his art.

In short: He ran away from his home in France when he was 14, lived on the streets of Paris and Toulouse, made Hip-Hop Music and Street Acting and of course Street Art, travelled a lot, came to Berlin in the 80ies - a very different town back then - co-founded the magazine “Style and the Family Tunes“ and the fashion-label „Irie Daily“, both in the 90ies, and for me is simply one of the most influential artists of our times.

I am a very a huge fan of his for a long time, so I was more than happy when he got in touch as he visited Hamburg and we could sit down at my studio to talk.

Laurence Vallières is a Canadian sculptor from Quebec, she works with recycled cardboard and builds incredibly realistic animals that often are larger than life. She has been showing internationally at galleries, institutions and many Urban Art Festivals. She even created two of her oversized gorillas for Burning Man 2016. She has only been around a few years in the art world, but has already made a big name for herself because of the uniqueness of her work.

I first met Laurence a few years ago when I did an interview with her for the german newspaper Die Zeit. She was part of the Knotenpunkt Festival in Hamburg in 2014 and has returned twice since. When she came to grace this years Knotenpunkt at the Affenfaust Galerie it was the perfect opportunity to invite her to the studio and record a show with her.

Larissa Maria Kerner habe ich vor rund 8 Jahren als Teil des Künstlerinnen-Duos ADAMEVA kennengelernt. Gemeinsam mit ihrer besten Freundin Marie Suberg hat Larissa unter diesem Namen Kunst und Musik gemacht. Laut, bunt, poppig, intensiv und voller Power war beides, die Malerei und die Songs von ADAMEVA, und es gehörte einfach in genau dieser Kombination zusammen.

Ich fand das damals alles so spannend, dass ich es bei heliumcowboy unbedingt ausstellen wollte, und so sind wir ein paar gute Jahre zu Beginn ihrer Karriere einen gemeinsam Weg gegangen. Dann, nach einer letzten wichtigen Ausstellung im Jahr 2014 haben wir uns in aller Freundschaft wieder getrennt, und uns zwar nicht ganz aus den Augen verloren aber wir haben doch nicht mehr so viel voneinander mitbekommen, und so war es für mich natürlich enorm spannend, Larissa mal in meinen Podcast einzuladen.

Und nein, wir reden nicht darüber, wie es ist die Tochter einer deutschen Musik-Legende zu sein oder im Rampenlicht von TV-Shows und Tabloids zu stehen, dafür gibt es andere Podcast-Formate, die diese gesellschaftlichen Themen besser abdecken als ich das jemals könnte oder überhaupt wollen würde. Larissa hat eine echt großartige Familie, die ich natürlich kennenlernen durfte, und auch Nena schätze ich wirklich sehr, aber ich bin einfach mehr an der Künstlerin, und an ihrer Inspiration, ihrer Herangehensweise und ihrem Werk interessiert. Ausserdem gibt es in Larissa's Musik- und Kunstkarriere gerade spannende Veränderungen, über die wir uns in meinem Studio auf der heliumcowboy Ranch unterhalten haben.

Graffiti-Legende Mirko Reisser (Daim) war gemeinsam mit Dennis Kraus zu Besuch bei mir. Dennis war ebenfalls in jungen Jahren GraffitiWriter und viele Jahre lang Chefredakteur des Backspin Magazins, und in dieser Episode meines Podcasts geht es um ein Buch, das Mirko mit herausgibt und für das Dennis als einer der Autoren Texte schreibt und das über eine Crowdfunding Aktion finanziert wird:

EINE STADT WIRD BUNT.
Ein Buch über die Geschichte der Hamburger Graffiti-Szene von 1980er bis 1999.

Ein großer Bildband wird das, mit größtenteils unveröffentlichtem Fotomaterial und ausführlichen Texten zur Entwicklung einer Jugendkultur, die Anfang der 80er aus den USA nach Deutschland schwappte und uns in der Kunst und Musik bis heute entscheidend prägt.

Harlan Levey has established a very fine and well known gallery in Brussels, one of the art capitals of Europe. With no money but hard work and dedication he has grown the Harlan Levey Projects from a small art space into a modern gallery that is recognized internationally by important Museums, Magazines and Collectors and takes part in some of the best art fairs.

We talk about what it takes to get to this level of success - and how to maintain and even grow it, how important a "Team-Spirit" between artists and gallery is for building strong and lasting relationships, what strategy he applied to his business, upcoming shows and fairs - and more.

Apologies for the sound quality - it is not up to the standards I would like to guarantee for this podcast. While I am recording all my german language shows with my guests in my studio using just the finest podcast equipment, some of my english episodes I have to interview remotely through the internet - like this one with Harlan. Due to this there is sometimes a drop in the audio quality, because my guests recording gear is out of my control.

Mal ein ganz spontaner Podcast - in der Sonderreihe "heliumTALK EXCURSIONS" nehme ich Euch mit in ein Gespräch über Hängung, Erwartungshaltungen und die Aufregung vor der Vernissage. Gleich zu Anfang der Aufbau-Arbeiten für seine neueste Einzelausstellung "VERBERGUNGEN" in der Galerie heliumcowboy habe ich mich mit dem Maler Jens Rausch und dem Manager der Galerie, Melvin Heikhaus, an die Mikrofone gesetzt.

Isabel Deimel und Oliver Lähndorf managen die Affordable Art Fair in Hamburg und wir reden darüber, wie Oliver es in 8 Jahren als Messechef geschafft hat, ausgerechnet in Hamburg, einem wie ich immer dachte schlechten Standort für eine Kunstmesse, die AAF zu etablieren. Und die von Isabel geleitete Emerging Artist Exhibition ist auch ein großes Thema. Wir reden über ein paar Hintergründe dieser und anderer Kunstmessen, das mangelnde Selbstbewusstsein der Hamburger Galerienszene, die einseitige Ausrichtung der Kulturbehörde der Hansestadt und wie sich vielleicht die Landschaft der bildenden Kunst in Hamburg verändern könnte.

My friend Jonathan LeVine and I have been talking a bunch of times already on my podcast, this is the sixth time we got together long distance. So it really is developing into a sub-show of the main-show or even a format on its own. This is why the logo looks a bit different and why we call our ongoing conversation about the art world from now on „Off the Record with Jonathan LeVine“.

We both speak very openly about our experiences in our business and, well, reveal things that I am sure a lot of other players in the market would rather not seen discussed out in the open like in these special episodes of the heliumTALK podcast. But that is what makes these shows special I think.

For this new episode we decided to focus on one topic, and we keep it short and sweet. We speak about the pricing of art work, because that is a question that comes up very often.
